Following in the tradition of SURVIVE THIS!! Zombies! comes SURVIVE THIS!! Dark Places & Demogorgons, a tabletop roleplaying game that uses the Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying game rules but mutates it into this retro nightmare. It’s sleek, slender and creepy as Hell.

In Dark Places & Demogorgons, you play as high school students during the early 1980s. The town you live in has had a rash of disappearances and strange happenings. The adults seem lost as what to do, the police are as clueless as ever and aren’t helping and Reverend Phillips is on another witch-hunt. It’s up to you and your friends to figure out what’s going on and stop it from happening again!

Excited to run my first game of DP&D this weekend, but I'm a little confused. Throughout several of the reference books it's mentioned that players could use an action or lose a reaction, etc. But I've searched 5 or 6 of the books and supplements and can't find the action economy that DP&D uses (how many actions of what kind they get per round, and what can be done in those actions.) Is it assumed we use the same or similar action economy as in 5e?

Yea, that's actually something we're looking to rectify. I apologize. In SURVIVE THIS!! games we used the words actions and attacks interchangeably, which does cause confusion.

Essentially, if it says, "Loses their next action" that means whatever they were immediately about to do, they can't do it anymore. If it says, "Loses all actions". That means if they have more than one attack per round, they lose all attacks, not just the next action.

I hope this helps. :)

That helps. So players basically get an attack (or attacks, based on class and level) and their movement every round? Thanks for the quick response as well. I bought this last year and things kept coming up that kept us from playing some I'm really looking forward to it. The game looks awesome.

A player gets 1 action per round, unless they gain more from leveling or abilities.

One of my biggest problems with this and every other OSR type role-playing game, including all the D&D offerings, is the extreme unrealism of the way Attributes [or whatever they call them] are portrayed. with the standard OSR game, they have a purportedly physically fit human being able to run at the fantastic rate of one-half of a mile an hour. I am a fat man and can do better than that, and if I am running, you should be too because something is chasing me. all the attributes are what I call 'game sized.' This means they are not remotely realistic from the perspective of the real world but appear to be good if you only see in from the perspective of the game. this makes upscaling these games for decently powerful supers nearly impossible. you think your hero is super fast only to find out that in the real world, a toddler can run faster than they can, and they are not only not superhuman, and they are less powerful than disabled people are in the real world. I really wish someone would fix this.

Games are not meant to be realistic. They are meant to be fun. If you try to chase down the realism rabbit hole you'll never get there and end up with an overly complicated and NOT FUN game.

With other OSR games I've played, the character's speed is the dungeon crawl Cautious walking around speed. It is your base speed. I can't speak for this game, but it would be easy to multiply the base speed by different factors for running and sprinting. I've never played a game that I didn't implement some sore of house rules.

These games are not realistic simulations. Try GURPS if you want something closer.

There needs to be some middle ground though. You can't expect total realism, but you also need to have something that resembles reality to buy into it.

But of course, that's where house rules come in.

David mentioned it in the comments of the Player Options & GM Guide, saying to just ignore the age rules and high school info.

However, I'd also recommend getting an occupation list, preferrably from a Cthulhu type game as kids growing up in Jeffersontown are going to most likely lean more towards that kind of setting as they grow up. The Solo Investigator's Handbook (which I use) or any edition of Call of Cthulhu would work.

After you make your character in DP&D, randomly roll three occupations and choose the one that best fits them and their skills. Then maybe go ahead and give them a +1 to a stat and raise their level to 2 or 3.

This way, all the background info is still relevant, as it was what they experienced in their youth.

I was looking into it again (been a while since I last played it) and I think I am missing something: what's the damage on the different fighting styles? (brawling, martial arts and wrestling) I can't find where it is stated. Also, looking it up I found that in page 61 there is a note:
"NOTE about STUN DAMAGE: Weapons list below do 1 HP of damage and the target who is then stunned for 1d4 turns..."
I can't seem to figure out to what list the note is referring to since there is none (below, or that applies to the note).
Is it posible that there are some unarmed combat rules and a list of weapons missing from the "DTRPGP_FULL_INTERIOR_WITH_COVERS.pdf" file (The same applies to my printed version)?

Sergio,

Unarmed damage is a d4+ STR. Its in the other games rules section under unarmed combat, but its not in the core DP&D book. I think we updated it for the other games, but forgot it for the first book. :( You get bonuses with fighting skills but it does not change the damage.

The Note about Stun should say ABOVE (not below). It refers to the Pepperspray item on the weapons table.

it's a shame that in this day and age the Heart Throb Persuasion Checks works along a Heterosexual mind frame. +2 for opposite sex and -2 for same sex. I guess the reality of Homosexuality isn't a thing in this world.

Your last sentence is an oxymoron "the reality of Homosexuality isn't a thing in this [fantasy] world". Bit of a weird observation in a world where you can be turned to stone by Medusa. In reality, at least 97% of people are heterosexual/attracted to the opposite sex, the other 3% aren't even all homosexual, some are asexual, bisexual etc. The bonus/penalty swing in the game is 4 meaning a teen heart throb can only persuade 20% more of the opposite-sex population. Quite conservative I'd say. A bonus because most of the opposite-sex are attracted, and a penalty because most of the same-sex are jealous/hate the guy. I think it's alright.

Mark, more recent figures are about 5-6% and varies by age group, with some age groups being as high as 9-10%.

This is just a game and cannot possibly have a rule for every single situation. If a man wrote these rules, he would probably fall short in describing child birth. It's not the author's fault for not being able to identify with any sexual preference other than his/her/its/them/etc own. I have never found an rpg that I was 100% satisfied with. Instead of being angry or annoyed at the author, I create a house rule - thereby making the game my own.

Just got the POD version, which looks great and just feels great to have a hard copy in hand to read, but I have to add the very bizarre addition of about 50-some odd pages at the beginning of the book being a printing for an entirely different book about stencil drum kits. The entire Dark Places & Demogorgons book is there, but there’s just this randomly odd additional (and quite possibly accidental) printing ahead of it.

Even though I loved "It", "The Goonies" and "Stand By Me" as a kid, I still got to ask this (admittedly pointed) question.

Does this game take you back to a "better" 1980's where Asian Kids (and Black/Mexican/Non White Kids) have as much a chance to shine, be heroic, and take Center Stage as the White Kids?

Or is it a more "brutally honest" and true to Horror-Genre-Racism 1980's where Asians and Blacks are relegated through bullying and mis-representation, onscreen and offscreen, to the roles of silent sexless-nerds (like the sickeningly racist caricature Long Duk-Dong), inconsequential stereotyped-jokes, or the first to die at the monster's claws? (It would be a MUCH shorter list of 1980s Horror Films where Non-Whites actually SURVIVE to the End)

I apologize for being confrontational: An *entire* boyhood and adoslesence of "ch!ng-ch@ng Chinaman Go Home" in Australia makes you grow up being *bitterly* resigned to...See more

Hi Li,

Great Question! We tried to be very diligent, not to focus on race at all or even mention it. The race presented in DP&D is an assumed "human", that's it. No more, no less. We did this intentionally to make the game more enjoyable for all players.

With that being said, this game was written by two white guys. So our sensitivity level, may not be as high as someone who has the unjust actual life experiences such as you have in Australia (and I'm very sorry that you've had to endure that).

What I can do, is offer you a complimentary PDF. All I need is your drivethrurpg email address, and allowing you to make that decision for yourself. And I ask that if you find offensive content in our game that you please tell us about it so we can make sure not to make that mistake again.

Thanks,
Eric Bloat

I love the concept and it has been nice to read the books.

I do have a question. The teens are described as not being particularly combat trained. (i.e. they shouldn't fight the monsters if they can help it.) Which makes me wonder how some of the adventures are supposed to end. Do they just get help? A scenario with possible way the players may resolve it would be nice.

Jeff, Thanks for kind words!

What we mean is the kids are necessarily supposed to go head to head with the monsters. Let's say the adventure involves a Chupacabra. Instead trying to fight the Chupacabra, the kids could lure it to an abandon house and once the monster is in the house, lock it inside and burn the house down. Or let's say their having runs in with the lake monster, maybe they don't need to fight the monster at all. Maybe they just need to photograph it and give the "proof" to the authorities to take care of. Or how about a ghost that's haunting the graveyard and scaring the kids. Maybe they can find out who the ghost is and find out that someone has dug up his bones and all they have to do re-bury the ghost and the problem goes away. Things like that.

I hope this helps! :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
